I’m a professional mattress reviewer, and this is the $1,400 mattress I sleep on each night

A mattress is a major purchase — plenty of them cost well over $1,000 — yet many of us buy one that we end up not loving, research shows. One big problem: With the number of mattress reviews you find online, it can feel impossible to know which will be right for you. “I used to sleep on the Purple Hybrid but I made the switch to Saatva about 18 months ago,” says The Slumber Yard’s Ross. “I like that it utilizes two different layers of coils for added support and long-term durability, and I find the euro pillowtop to be more comfortable than a standard memory foam mattress.”

He’s not alone: Marten Carlson, a self-described “bigger guy,” and senior editor at Mattress Clarity, says he also sleeps on the Saatva Classic mattress because it can handle his extra weight. “I personally like a hybrid mattress that can give me a nice balance of comfort and support. I sleep on my side and back so I need something that can both support me and relieve pressure on my shoulders and hips,” says Carlson. Logan Foley, managing editor at SleepFoundation.org, says this is a great hybrid mattress. “I really like the feel of a traditional innerspring mattress over a completely memory foam bed,” says Foley. With polyfoam layers on top of the pocketed coils, Foley says Luxury Firm is the perfect compromise for him and his partner who have different sleep positions and are different weights. “I also tend to sleep hot, and the pocketed microcoils and the Tencel cover help to pull heat away from me so I don’t wake up sweaty in the summer,” says Foley.

For side sleepers: Leesa Hybrid, $1,199 for a full

Comprised of both premium foam and pocket springs, this firm mattress also has a hole-punched top layer of foam to keep you cool while you sleep. Wirecutter lists the Leesa Hybrid as their pick for best hybrid mattress and best mattress for side sleepers because of its overall comfort and price compared to its competition. This bed is also made without ozone depleters, flame retardants, heavy metals and phthalates, and it comes with a 100-night trial, so you can get your money back if you don’t love the mattress.

For back or side sleepers, or those with lower back pain: Casper Original Mattress, $1,076 for a full

This is one of Consumer Reports top picks for best foam mattress (they give it high marks for back and side sleepers) and pros love it too. Dr. Allen Conrad, a chiropractor in North Wales, Pennsylvania says, “Finding a mattress that supports the lumbar spine is essential in preventing low back pain.” For this, he recommends the Casper Original Mattress thanks to its reinforced lumbar cushioning. NYC-area spinal and orthopedic surgeon Dr. Gbolahan Okubadejo looks for a mattress that’s firm yet comfortable. “It’s coil is covered with Sealy Response Pro HD and the increased coil count provides more personalized support because every coil can act independently of its adjoining coils allowing it to conform perfectly to the amount of pressure being exerted,” says Okubadejo.
