There’s no question that SUVs are the most popular type of vehicle in the U.S., accounting for 15 of the top 25 overall best-selling vehicles in 2023. The complete list of the 25 best-selling SUVs includes another 10 that expand the bandwidth of capability, features, and equipment even further. Whether you’re in the market for a full-size SUV with serious towing capability, an all-electric SUV, a plug-in hybrid, or even a 400-horsepower oversized hot hatch, there’s something for you on this list.

1. Toyota RAV4

Total units sold: 434,943

The Toyota

+0.37%
RAV4’s mix of ample interior space, modern in-cabin tech, and abundant standard safety features are among the primary reasons it’s the best-selling SUV in America for 2023. For those seeking to eke out every possible mpg, the RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid are also excellent do-it-all SUVs.

2. Tesla Model Y

Total units sold: 385,900

America’s best-selling EV is also its most popular electric SUV, the Tesla
TSLA,
-1.60%
Model Y. With 330 miles of range and renewed eligibility for up to $7,500 in federal tax credits, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand why.

3. Honda CR-V

Total units sold: 361,457

Perennially near the top of this list, the Honda
HMC,
+0.62%
CR-V offers an incredibly consistent value from generation to generation, with the latest as well-equipped, dependable, and nicely finished as ever. It’s so good it’s KBB’s Compact SUV Best Buy of 2024.

4. Nissan Rogue

Total units sold: 271,458

With competition like the CR-V, RAV4, and Mazda CX-50, the Nissan Rogue’s presence at number four speaks volumes about its value, with similarly-equipped offerings at lower prices than the better-known rivals.

5. Jeep Grand Cherokee

Total units sold: 244,594

The Jeep Grand Cherokee’s top-spec models are outright luxury vehicles, some with tremendous off-road ability. However, even the base models offer upscale interiors, robust tech features, and rugged good looks. The Grand Cherokee 4xe adds 26 miles of all-electric range and 56 mpg combined.

6. Chevrolet Equinox

Total units sold: 212,701

Chevy’s Equinox isn’t the newest SUV on the block, but it is spacious, with good infotainment tech and excellent pricing, starting from just $26,600, making it one of the most affordable vehicles on this list. Included with every Equinox is Chevy Safety Assist, with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, automatic high beams, and more.

7. Hyundai Tucson

Total units sold: 209,624

The Hyundai Tucson’s spacious, modern interior and advanced technology — including standard wireless smartphone integration on lower trims — give it plenty of appeal in addition to its somewhat edgy style. Folks who drive many highway miles may appreciate the optional Highway Driving Assist system, which combines adaptive cruise control and lane-following assist.

8. Ford Explorer

Total units sold: 186,799

Standard Co-Pilot360 Assist+ gives the Ford
F,

Explorer adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane-centering functions, evasive steering assist, post-collision braking, and a suite of other driver-assist features. The Explorer can also tow up to 5,600 pounds when properly equipped and offers a range of powerful engines.

9. Toyota Highlander

Total units sold: 169,543

The Toyota Highlander is one of the most family-focused SUVs on the market, with seating for up to 8, lots of cargo room, and plenty of standard safety assist features with Safety Sense 2.5. Wireless smartphone integration and 14 cup holders are also standard.

10. Subaru Outback

Total units sold: 161,814

Some might call it a wagon, but Subaru calls it an SUV, and with standard AWD, up to 9.5 inches of ground clearance (Wilderness model), and more than 75 cubic feet of cargo space, who are we to argue? Whatever you call it, the Outback is a comfortable, affordable choice with genuine off-road and bad-weather ability.

11. Subaru Crosstrek

Total units sold: 159,193

With an all-new look and interior for 2024, the Subaru Crosstrek blurs the boundaries between hatchback and crossover SUV, with the distinction becoming essentially meaningless in the face of the Crosstrek’s standard AWD, 5-passenger seating, 54.9 cubic feet of cargo space, and 8.7 inches of ground clearance (or 9.3 inches of ground clearance in the Wilderness model).

12. Jeep Wrangler

Total units sold: 156,581

The Jeep Wrangler is an American icon and a legend on the trails for good reason — it’s one of the most capable off-road vehicles on the planet. It’s also available in Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid form, adding 26 miles of all-electric range to give some civility and off-road ability.

13. Mazda CX-5

Total units sold: 153,808

Known for its fun-to-drive character, the Mazda CX-5 is pleasantly styled, with an upscale cabin and standard AWD. While there’s no hybrid variant offered, there’s a potent turbocharged 2.5-liter engine option that’s good for 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque on 93-octane gas.

14. Subaru Forester

Total units sold: 152,566

The squarer, slightly dorkier sibling to the Crosstrek and Outback, the Subaru Forester knows that looks are temporary, but capability lasts a lifetime. Ruggedly capable in a way few SUVs of its size are, the Forester’s excellent ground clearance, standard AWD, and spacious cargo area make it practical just about anywhere.

15. Ford Escape

Total units sold: 140,968

The Ford Escape’s sleek, modern exterior belies its roomy cabin and reasonable pricing. Available all-wheel drive, four engine options (including a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid), and several trim levels make the Escape a customizable mainstream SUV.

16. Kia Sportage

Total units sold: 140,780

Cutting-edge style and excellent technology help the Kia
000270,
+0.80%
Sportage stand out in a profoundly competitive segment, as does its value pricing. Kia Drive Wise safety tech is standard, and taller rear-seat passengers will enjoy the 41.3 inches of legroom.

17. Hyundai Santa Fe

Total units sold: 131,574

The Hyundai Santa Fe is about to enter an all-new generation. However, the current one is still excellent, earning KBB’s 2-Row Midsize SUV Best Buy Award for 2023 thanks to its capability and remarkable value. If you’re looking for affordable high-end tech, the Santa Fe offers Remote Smart Parking Assist, which lets you park the car from outside the vehicle.

Plus: 10 new SUVs coming soon—and worth the wait

18. Ford Bronco Sport

Total units sold: 127,476

With all the image you can fit into a compact SUV, the Ford Bronco Sport proved a strong seller for the brand in 2023, thanks to its standard AWD, strong safety performance, and rugged good looks.

19. Honda HR-V

Total units sold: 122,206

The Honda HR-V looks much like a Honda CR-V or Passport that’s farther away, and that’s a great thing in terms of style and function. With a spacious interior despite the small footprint (including 55.1 cubic feet of storage), the HR-V exudes quality but starts at just over $24,000.

20. Toyota 4Runner

Total units sold: 119,238

With old-school truck-style body-on-frame construction, the Toyota 4Runner delivers actual off-road ability, towing, and hauling. It’s not the most efficient or high-tech SUV, but it is a rugged, reliable workhorse.

21. Lexus RX

Total units sold: 114,033

As different from the 4Runner as you can imagine, the Lexus RX is decidedly car-like, plush, quiet, and comfortable, with only a nod toward unpaved (but well-groomed) road ability. The RX is also the only SUV on this list from a luxury brand besides Tesla. The latest variant of the RX offers conventional, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid powertrains, with up to 366 hp on tap.

22. Chevrolet Trailblazer

Total units sold: 111,014

Youthful style, available AWD, a roomy cabin for its size, and lots of standard equipment (including wireless smartphone integration) make the Chevrolet Trailblazer an attractive choice even before you see the $23,100 starting price.

23. Kia Telluride

Total units sold: 110,765

The Kia Telluride is more than just another good value in the 3-row midsize SUV class — it’s the reigning king, winning every KBB Best Buy Award for the class since its debut for the 2020 model year. Among Telluride’s greatest strengths are great all-around ability, generous standard features, and the ability to configure it from the value zone well into premium territory.

24. Chevrolet Tahoe

Total units sold: 110,328

The biggest, burliest, most capable SUV on the best-seller list, the Chevrolet Tahoe is built on a truck-based frame. It comes standard with a 5.3-liter V8 engine rated for 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque, which, when combined with rear-wheel drive, gives the Tahoe its maximum tow rating of 8,400 pounds. However, a 420-hp 6.2-liter V8 and a 3.0-liter inline-6 Duramax turbodiesel are also available.

25. Honda Pilot

Total units sold: 110,298

The Honda Pilot is a long-running favorite of America’s families, so it’s no surprise to see it on this list. The Pilot’s roomy, versatile cabin, strong and refined V6, and fully current technology, both standard and optional, make it an excellent choice for many families spanning a wide range of lifestyles and budgets.
